Rob Roy and the three visiting librarians remind us that the libraries they represent are struggling to build and maintain their basic print collections and are only beginning to get a glimpse of library automation technology.

Vietnam is now connected to the Internet but the costs are very high (users pay for both data received and sent, as well as connect time charges). The quality of local telephone lines also often limit the speed of data transmission, so being on the Net is a luxury item for libraries in Vietnam..

This group of librarians return to Vietnam next week, with enhanced skills and goals to aim for. We wish them well.

N.B. An in-depth interview of these visitors will be published in an upcoming issue of the Pacific Rim Magazine, published by Langara College.
